Message opening and click-through tracking works how?

how does message opening and click-through tracking work technically?

Do they both rely on images stored on a server?

I only ask because I see quite a lot of mail services not loading external images by default now ...

Click-thru is done by adding the MLM url to your URLs, when the recipient click MLM will then process it.

Opening is done in a very similar way but indeed with the URL of a picture.

There are no other ways to do tracking.
