Uploading local lists to mlm

I am using MaxBulk Mailer 8.4.2-US and I have just installed MLM and am using mySQL to maintain the database. Installation was successful and settings appear to be working correctly. I have a list on my computer I want to upload to MLM so that I can offer subscribe and unsubscribe functionality for my subscribers.
When I use the Upload to MLM... on the recipients menu it gives the following error message.

No recipients have been uploaded to the remote list 'XXXXX'. Check your list. Make sure the list contains at least etc etc.

I have checked the list and it has all the things asked for in the error message. I have also tried changing the dbhost settings in lm_settings.php from the remote MySQL host name to 'localhost' without success. Can you help?

Are you uploading a list that already exists in MaxBulk Mailer?
