I spent quite a bit of time talking with Earthlink support (several different people with different answers). MaxBulk Mailer recommended using EMSTP for sending messages from Earthlink, but Earthlink tells me they don't support that - only POP and my account is set up properly. However, I have been getting back a lot of 550 messages. Any suggestions?

Yes they do support ESMTP. A Simple test with Telnet demonstrates that:
> telnet smtpauth.earthlink.net 25
Trying 207.69.189.209...
Connected to smtpauth.earthlink.net.
Escape character is '^]'.

That shows they support ESMTP with PLAIN, LOGIN and CRAM-MD5 methods.
