What version are you using? What do you mean with your messages not being encoded?

decoding MIME / Base 64

I have v 1.1.1 The news article (binary) arrives as text, not decoded.

Indeed, MaxNews has no support for binaries yet. It downloads them to the '~/Library/Application Support/Maxprog/MaxNews/Downloads' folder as is. You can then drag and drop those files to Stuffit Expander.
