gmail STARTTLS "non-local recipient"

I'm trying to do a mailing via Gmail.

All the settings are correct (as described by maxprog with smtp.gmail.com, the email as account id, authentication by esmtp and the correct password. Gmail is enabled for imap), and I've tried working with a number of different Gmail accounts but am getting the same result each time as follows:

[01] 10/3 17:55:34 220 mx.google.com ESMTP fa3sm24040132wbb.3
[01] 10/3 17:55:34 > EHLO [email protected]

250-8BITMIME
250-STARTTLS
250 ENHANCEDSTATUSCODES
[01] 10/3 17:55:34 > AUTH LOGIN
[01] 10/3 17:55:34 530 5.7.0 Must issue a STARTTLS command first. fa3sm24040132wbb.3
[01] 10/3 17:55:35 220 mx.google.com ESMTP fa3sm24040174wbb.3
[01] 10/3 17:55:35 > EHLO [email protected]
[01] 10/3 17:55:35 250-mx.google.com at your service, [81.168.48.159]
250-SIZE 35882577
250-8BITMIME
250-STARTTLS

[01] 10/3 17:55:35 530 5.7.0 Must issue a STARTTLS command first. fa3sm24040174wbb.3

At the bottom of the window is the error message "delivery not allowed to non-local recipient"

Any suggestions anyone?

Thanks in advance.

It's an old version - v2.8.

I hope that's not going to be the problem - don't really want to spend €70 on an app used only a couple of times a year :-(

Yes it is a problem since I believe that version doesn't support secure connections. Secure connections were added later.
