default recipients and settings not saving- always blank

In preferences, for account and list, I have default choices selected. But each time I open a MBM message document, the pull down menus are blank. So if I don't notice this, and I enter another recipient, it asks me if I want to save another list. I would like both of these to actually default to the default, without having to select the correct list each time. I trashed the MBM preferences file but it didn't fix the problem. Thanks.
 
There is no option for "default" in the pull down menus. It always comes up blank when I open a document, no matter what the setting.
 
OK. I figured this much out: If I create a new document, the preferences work. If I open an old document, the pull down menus for recipients and settings are always blank.
