Tag usage in HTML

I am trying to use a simple tag in a HTML email and it doesn't work... the word Dear appears with nothing beside. I have also set the Opt1 field to be the salutation and tried [Opt1] in the code too, but that does nothing either. What am I missing?

This is the code

<p class="news-body">Dear [Firstname], <br>

and I see

Dear ,

It's obviously having some kind of a go, as the [] disappear, as if being replaced by the intended text....

Any ideas?

Is the 'Singly' option checked in the settings? Is the 'Test mode' deactivated? Do you have at least one unsent and activated recipient in your list?

Thanks for the help. I can't activate "Singly" option in MBM 3.4 Pro: however, I hunted around the preferences a bit and found "Activate tags processing" was not enabled. That did the trick!
