MLM Upload Action Pulldown Menus

What is difference between Overwrite, Append and Update on the "To Upload" in MLM? Can you give me a brief explanation? Thank you so much!

'Overwrite' means replacing the old list with the new one.
'Append' means adding the new list to the existing one.
'Update' means that data will be updated, nothing is added, just first name, last name... associated to each email address will be updated.
