I pressume that 'contains' also covers the case of 'start with', i.e. the specified string will be matched if it appears on the subject line anywhere, including the starting position. Nevertheless, I noticed that only when I included a second rule with 'start with', the specified string would be matched if it was indeed at the beginning of the subject line. Or was it my imagination?

Yes, 'contains' also covers the case of 'start with'. But note that those rules are for non-standard rules only. I have checked the code (just in case) and all is fine.
